Few weeks after the music streaming app Playfre launched, it was blocked from accessing UMG’s contents on Youtube, as a result of this, Playfre’s users could not access any UMG’s content on the platform.

This followed with a cease and desist letter from UMG’s legal representatives in Nigeria; Punuka Attorney & Solicitors to Playfre Music on June 21,2019.

Playfre’s legal counsel explained to Punuka what Playfre was all about on behalf of the company’s CEO; Chika Nwaogu. In its argument, Playfre did not contain any sound recording as stated in the letter of any UMG’s artist and the music was only streamed via Youtube embed.

Playfre’s users were unable to stream UMG’s content for over 2 months. But everything is back to normal and now users can begin to enjoy contents from UMG’s artist once again.

With operations in both Kenya and Nigeria, Playfre is an African music streaming platform that was launched on 1 May 2019. The platform offers users across Africa access to over 50 million songs for free. To date, Playfre has amassed over 5,000 registered users and over 1,000,000 streams.
